Weaving Waste
Tools: Weaving
For the this assignment, we were to look at images and ideas which inspire us, to
reproduce on the loom.
I had found this image on Pinterest. I then further looked into the image and found out that a found plastic bag was used by the artist, Vilde Rolfsen, to create the texture. This was her artist’s statement:
“plastic bags are a huge contributor to the landfill waste and are extremely harmful to our oceans and the creatures living there. Do not say yes to a plastic bag when shopping. These plastic bags were found on the street.”
The colours and depth created by the image are something which interested me. Along with these attributes, I would also like to incorporate the message of the artwork in what I create as well. For materials, I wanted to work with cotton yarn, to capture the delicacy of the folds in the image, but I also want to try to capture the crumpled nature of it. I also thought of working with fish tape, to add more dimension to the work.
I used cotton thread as the warp, 20 ply and white in colour.
For the weft, I alternated between cotton thread and plastic bags, cut into tinier strips.
The final piece looked as follows:
