Weaving
Beyond a Loom
Tools: Weaving
As a precursor to learning to weave, I had to experiment with natural materials. I decided to work with leaves. I used the existing holes in the leaves, and I stitched within these naturally created frames. I took inspiration from Wabi- Sabi, a Japanese philosophy which highlights faults and celebrates them, and Rafoogari, an Indian practice of mending cloth, which employs extremely fine skills to restore the piece to its original state. While both of these philosophies are based on fixing broken items, Wabi- Sabi takes pride in these faults, while Rafoogari prefers them to go unnoticed. In this project, I have tried to incorporate the skill of Rafoogari with the appreciation of Wabi- Sabi.
