Universal Access for MG Road Metro

Location : Bengaluru, India

Tools:  Hand- Drafting, Adobe Photoshop

Brief: Retrofitting a metro station to accommodate universal access principles.

We live in a world which is an amalgamation of different people, from different backgrounds, with different abilities. Unfortunately, our buildings and design have remained very narrow- minded in terms of the inclusiveness for a very long time. In recent times, we have seen a shift in this field, where more and more modern constructions are being made accessible. The government has done its part, by making laws which make it compulsory to make inclusive buildings. The implementation of these laws is a part of the problem, the short-sighted design of the building being the other.

The Metro Station, a major public space is product of the latter half of the problem. While the entire building is accessible in most places, the emergency exits are not. Thus, the differently- abled people will be able to enter the building, but their exit is uncertain. Even for the people who can use the existing exits, finding them is a task on its own. In these circumstances, I propose to make a system, including pathways, signages and a new emergency exit, which can ensure that during an emergency, the commuters are self –sufficient, and are capable of taking action for the safety of themselves and others around them.
