Brief: To design a set of community gardens surrounding the Matrimandir monument.

This project was undertaken in collaboration with A M Designs, a design firm based in Pune.

The brief for  Auroville Garden Design Call was to design a set of community gardens surrounding the Matrimandir. Along with a strong sense of aesthetics, the project also called for a deep understanding for Auroville's philosophy as well as a design rooted in its context.

Introduction to Auroville

Auroville is an experimental township set up in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, India. Led by Mirra Alfassa known as the "Mother", this settlement has its own vivid philosophy and code of living. Renowned architect, Roger Anger was responsible for the master plan for Auroville.

We sought to work with the Light garden out of the three gardens offered. We tried to explore what 'light' meant in different contexts and come up with the following mood board.

Our core design philosophy for the garden of Light, was to use the absence of the light to make the visitor aware of its presence.
